Hellerwork

Hellerwork is a form of structural integration bodywork that is similar in many ways to Rolfing, among the differences is the three pronged approach taken by practitioners of this field. Bodywork, Movementwork and Self Aware Dialogue are the three pillars of Hellerwork, and each is required for a participant to achieve the best results.

Heller believed that movement was essential to the success of structural integration work. The physical bodywork, which took place deep within the tissues, in the fascia, required reestablished movement patterns that reinforced the improved patterns of motion. The aspects of Dialogue that help an individual feel freer and more open also help them move through their lives in an open and freely flowing manner. Everything is interrelated.

The Dialogue process is active, and the patient must take an active part in their own treatment. Breath awareness and control, the use of sound and directed motion are all part of the experience. Together they create a new experience and pattern so the body can heal and hold on to its newly improved state.

Hellerwork is often carried out in segments based upon specific themes. For example, if the ribs and pelvis are being worked structurally, inspiration, physical or spiritual may be the subject of the dialogue. Other themes include reaching out, surrender and control, standing on ones own two feet and integration. There are 11 themes in total.

Requirements for students interested in Hellerwork are somewhat more stringent than those connected with generic massage school. The course of study takes a year or more and is only offered in specific locations.
