Hot Stone Massage

Hot stone massage is a massage practice that involves the use of heated stones in a specific type of relaxation based massage. The stones, usually basalt, are heated in a hot water bath and retrieved by the practitioner as needed. The stones are used to both rub and warm specific areas of the body and, as they cool, returned to the water for later use.

There are a number of specific schools for hot stone massage and to use their appellation you are required to undergo their training. You do not need to take such a specified course, however, to do hot stone massage. That is just a matter of practice.

Among the benefits of hot stone work is the increased relaxation of tense muscles that is common when heat is applied. While some therapists consider hot stone work to be “fluff” the fact remains that heat is a good way to ease sore and tired muscles. Additionally, the relaxed state of the muscles can allow the therapist deeper access to the tissue being worked.

Hot stone massage is most commonly performed in a spa setting, but can be incorporated into any massage office as an additional service. Access to water and a place to plug in a heater is all that is required. Rocks and all tools should be properly cleaned between clients to prevent the risk of cross contamination.

For many people hot stone massage is considered the height of luxury. Soothing, warm and relaxing, hot stone massages are particularly popular during cold weather.
